The Four Division of Windhorse
As described above, the paper-made "Lungta" (wind horse) and the patterns of the tiger, lion, garuda, and dragon symbolize the "La" (soul) and the "Four Elements." However, understanding its characteristics remains crucial in modern times. Generally, the "La" is considered the pure line of life energy, the foundational consciousness, or the habitual tendencies imprinted on the foundational consciousness, among other interpretations. As stated in the "Secret Scriptures": "The soul follows life, forming an interdependent relationship between a person's life and consciousness. If the soul becomes lost, a person may fall ill or encounter misfortune. Therefore, rituals to protect and soothe the soul are commonly practiced." The soul is believed to reside within the body, intertwined with habitual tendencies and consciousness, performing various functions
The significance of the wind horse is evident, as no one can remain indifferent to their own life and well-being. Thus, the traditional culture that emphasizes health and prosperity is of great importance. In the "Ritual of Offering to the Wind Horse, Auspicious White Conch, and Right-Coiling," it is said: "The swift and powerful wind horse, encircled by the four guardians—tiger, lion, garuda, and dragon—floats in the sky, conquering enemies with mighty strength. The white lion, possessing three powers, instills fear and bestows glory, subduing crowds and filling the body with radiance. The blue dragon, with its commanding voice, evokes reverence in all who hear. The red tiger, with its courageous and steadfast heart, broadens the mind. The garuda king, raising the banner of law, seizes the resolute heart. The precious wind horse, with its immense power, swiftly accomplishes all endeavors, fulfilling wishes."
These symbolic meanings of the wind horse illustrate a body filled with brilliance, speech that commands respect, an open and expansive mind, the ability to conquer enemies, a long and stable life, the swift accomplishment of endeavors, the expansion of personal health and reputation, and the accumulation of wealth as vast as the ocean. The characteristics of the wind horse are indeed countless.
